Modeling Outdoor Virtual Environments for Simulations and Games

Abstract:

Realistic outdoor virtual environments contribute to the success of computer games and simulation applications. There exist several games that use real geospatial content such as digital elevation models (DEM), high-res satellite images, vegetation, transport and cultural layers. Knowledge about geospatial data content and how to use them in game environments helps achieving better and realistic game environments while decreasing costs. In this seminar, we will discuss the fundamentals of geospatial data that can be used in game environments. We will also discuss topographic facts and fundamentals of synthetic environment generation. 
 

Biography:

Erdal Yılmaz has B.S. degrees in Civil Engineering and Survey Engineering. He received M. Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Information Systems Department of Informatics Institute, METU in 2003 and 2010. His main areas of interest are computer graphics, computer games and GIS. Currently he is working for Sobee Game Studios as R&D manager.
